Celebrating the return of BTME 2022

Celebrating the return of BTME 2022

In March, we celebrated the long-awaited return of the BTME show, and this year we made our way to Harrogate with an all-new exhibition stand as well as a selection of our very best machinery.

At the centre of our stand sat our most advanced and premium machine, the Express Dual 5500. In addition, visitors were able to get a good look at both the Anglemaster 4500, Anglemaster 4100, and Express Dual 4100 machines. The stand also came equipped with a dedicated area for visitors to chat to our team about recruitment opportunities, while the new CBN wheel was a particular promotional point throughout the week.

The opening evening of BTME 2022 saw the running of the BIGGA industry awards ceremony. We had the absolute honour of sponsoring the Outstanding Contribution of the Year Award, which was won by Dennis Mortram. Dennis was recognised for his tireless work to help establish training and educational opportunities for those working in the golf course maintenance profession.

On Wednesday it was our turn to host, with the 2022 BIGGA Delegation Reception getting underway in the Harrogate Convention Centre Auditorium. The reception evening is designed to allow all past delegates the opportunity to attend, network, and re-live memories from their own delegation experience. Guests are also invited from BIGGA and the GCSAA, in addition to numerous industry friends and professionals.

This year marked a special occasion for the Bernhard and Company BIGGA delegation, with the 200th delegate taking part in the educational experience to the USA in February. With the change in date of BTME from its usual slot, this year our delegates had already taken part in the experience by the time BTME came around. This allowed us to arrange a live Q&A with the 200 Club delegates, which was very well received by the audience.

Speaking on the success of the show, Bernhard and Company Managing Director, Steven Nixon, said: “Attending BTME is just another great tool for us to keep our products, name, and brand in front of people. It really helps us build on the work we are doing all year round, so it is very important for us.”

Bernhard and Company and Rugby School: The Preservation of Sporting Legacy

Rugby School in Warwickshire, one of the most revered public schools in the country, has taken the decision to re-lay its hallowed turf almost 200 years after the inception of the sport rugby on its grounds.

DSC00516

As the demands of modern turf maintenance continue to evolve, the school has determined it the right time to resurface its main playing field, ‘The Close’ to make way for a sand-based pitch that will feature an all-new irrigation system. The new pitch will be more weather-resistant and allow the grounds team to maintain the surfaces to the highest possible standards in all conditions.

In addition to its longstanding relationship with Bernhard and Company, Rugby School is also a customer, benefitting from its own pair of grinding machines. A key element to the development of the new turf will be ensuring that the grass is cut with perfectly sharp mower blades. With an Express Dual 400 and Anglemaster 400 in the workshop, the grounds team at the school will be able to limit damage to the new grass blades and promote superior turf health.

Commenting on the project, Grounds Manager at Rugby School, James Mead, said: “This is a huge project that has been in the pipeline for around five years. We started to see that the extremes of weather we were facing were having a detrimental effect on the pitch, and the performance wasn’t quite where we wanted it.

“Working with Bernhard and Company is a great combination for us. Both our mindsets are towards the delivery and maintenance of high-quality performance turf. We’ve never looked back since introducing our Bernhard grinding machines, and they will be crucial for us throughout the course of this project,” he added.

Mark Taylor, Head Mechanic at Rugby School commented: “I find both of the machines we have in our workshop extremely useful and simple to operate. The quality of finish that we are able to achieve on our mower blades with the Bernhard grinding machines is absolutely spot on.”

We are also the exclusive provider of all sharpening equipment at the facility and will be responsible for the sharpening of all maintenance equipment across the site.

The Academy is divided into four main areas of learning, each designed to enhance different skills. At the heart of the programme are training and education – students will benefit from a specialist provision of sports turf educational packages, right up to degree level internships. In addition, academy students will have the opportunity to provide seasonal tournament support to venues hosting turf-based sporting events throughout the UK.

Through the technical services pillar, vast improvements will be made to grassroots football pitches, while the trials and research course will focus on innovation and emerging technologies that enter the sports turf industry. The unique nature of the Academy makes it a world-class prospect, as cutting-edge sports turf research can be put into ‘live’ in-situ trials – a first for elite sport played on grass.

Scott Purdy, Business Development Manager EMEA for Bernhard and Company, said: “Our relationship with Leicester City stretches back over a number of years, and we are proud to be supporting them in the development of this outstanding facility.

“Education is at the heart of everything we do, so we are pleased to be continuing our pursuit to give back to the turf industry. The Academy will provide an ideal platform for young turf professionals to hone their skills and develop a well-rounded knowledge before heading out into the wider industry,” he added.

In line with the announcement, our marketing team have produced an informative video, featuring interviews and clips, that dives deeper into what the Sports Turf Academy has to offer.
