The Adelaide Oval

The Adelaide Oval is regarded as one of the best cricket grounds in the world, and is currently undergoing a 450 million dollar redevelopment.

Turf Manager, Damian Hough – who has been at the ground for 16 years feels very privileged to work in such hallowed surroundings. “Adelaide Oval is such a beautiful ground. The redevelopment will still include a grassed northern mound, so you’ll still be able to sit in the grandstand and look across the pitch at the old Morton Bay Fig trees, over the famous score board – installed in 1911, to St Peter’s Cathedral beyond. The new grandstands and facilities will truly be world class. It is very be exciting the watch this development.”

The Ashes in 2013/14 will play on drop in pitches for the first time, with the establishment of the pitches already complete and growing in the nursery on our number 2 ground.”

Damien has been using Bernhard grinders for nearly three years. “They are so important to me to help maintain the standard I expect at all times. I’m very happy with the results we are getting. The training was good, they educated and trained our mechanic well, and they’re only a phone call away if needed.

“Together, we set up a grinding programme, the top priority was to have sharp reels at all times. I knew this was the best way to get the result I wanted immediately. We noticed the difference straight away, during the first summer. The result was a really clean cut, which meant that we didn’t lose as much moisture, and we were able to maintain a clean cut and presentation all the time. We look after other facilities in Adelaide, so we need to be on top of managing our maintenance programme and machines at all times.

Our mechanic does a great job, and we are always looking at ways to continually improve. Presentation is the key. We have always had a good outfield and we need to keep improving on this, particularly as the games are televised every week. It’s a good investment, and critical in the management and preparation of our famous Oval.”
